Round 3 results: Loerie


The Algoa Rally Club 50k challenge 3 rd round was held in the Loerie area on Saturday the 6 June following a week of rain and this cast some doubt on the stages particularly the farm lands which had been freshly graded. At Saturday morning recce the decision was taken to cut out some of the farm stages and run Van Stadens Pass, Gamtoos & Melon with service park and HQ at Spekboom Lapa as planned.


The first car away at Van Stadens was visiting National championship competitors Richard Leeke with local navigator Rikus Fourie driving a R2 Ford Fiesta, in hot pursuit was Johan and Ria Viljoen Volkswagen Golf, Bryan and Keith Heine Datsun SSS, Ross Bartle and Rick Janse Van Rensburg SAC Vokswagen Polo.

The first casualty of the front runners was Neels Vosloo Toyota Yaris in stage 7 with a broken transmission. The remaining front runners held the pace for the duration of the rally until less than a kilometre from the end Bartle had transmission failure after moving into third place behind Viljoen.

The 1400 class S1 had the first casually in the second stage of Van stadens Pass when Melissa Heyman lost control in the last corner before the old bridge and spun off into a side road collecting a stationary vehicle. Melissa and navigator Anza Muller received medical attention and were taken to hospital for observation, fortunately discharged the same evening, bruised and battered. The S1 Class was won by last year’s 50k champion Ashley Bezuidenhout with National experienced Mark Irvine navigating followed by Stepno and Lario Pieterse driving a similar Volkswagen RA5 Citi Golf. Jan Vosloo and Ria Jansen Toyota Yaris were unable to spoil the party of Citi Golf,s and finished seconds behind in third place.

S2 1600cc 50k class winners were Rufus Neethling and Henry Adams Volkswagen Polo, chasing visitors Richard Leak and Rikus Fourie Ford Fiesta R2, first on the day and not part of the 50k championship using this event as a warm up to the Volkswagen National Rally which will take place on the 17 and 18 July. Local competitors will take part in the National event as part of the 50k Challenge scoring separately on the Friday & Saturday,

and about 40 rally cars are expected to take part and will compete on special stages at PEOTR super stage, Uitenhage and Loerie area.
