The regional rally championship started on 21 March 2009 with only 6 competitors, even though the competitor numbers were low at the beginning due to the tough economic situation, It was a hard fought contest particularly between the RA5 Class drivers and navigators with a few new names entering the field that included Ross Bartle with a history of karting followed by Devon Alchin from oval and road racing experience, and Keith Mc Gregor and navigator Frank Coetzee, as new comers to motor sport, also joined the fray. Morne Janse Van Rensburg, a S20 ARC National competitor, managed to compete in a few local events between Nationals as well.

21 MARCH 2009

First round of the Regional championship took place at the Vlaktes stage in Uitenhage which included the pan area where spectators could view the cars drifting around the slippery surface. Simon Joubert and navigator Kevin Filen completed the event in first place followed by Iddo Stein/Darren Murphy then Reggie Beldon/Mark Irvine, respective drivers and navigators. Wade Van Zummeren was side lined with engine trouble and JP Van Zyl/Brent Blume were unable to finish with a broken shock absorber. Ross Bartle/Neville Bartle finished a respectable fourth place for their first rally.

9 MAY 2009

Second round of the regional championship was repeated at the Vlaktes stage with an increase in the number of competitors including a few S20 Cars. New comers out for their first appearance were Devon Alchin and navigator Christo Lantze. Simon Joubert/Kevin Filen once again completed the event victorious, 72 seconds ahead of Morne Janse Van Rensburg /Keith McGregor, followed by Andre Ferreira and Ross Bartle. Devon Alchin/Christo Lantze overshot a 90 degree bend and rolled out of contention.

10/11 JULY 2009 Volkswagen Rally

National Volkswagen Rally was included in the regional championship to compete on the same stages with Friday and Saturday counting as two separate regional events. The rally documentation took place at the auto pavilion, home of VW South Africa, and then proceeded through a variety of tar and gravel stages around Uitenhage, Culturama, Longmore Forests and Kings Beach. Simon Joubert/Kevin Filen who were fired up to impress in this national event, were early casualties rolling in the Vlaktes stage. The battle for the lead was between Iddo Steyn/Darren Murphy – Reggie Beldon/Mark Irvine – Ross and Neville Bartle. Devon Alchin unfortunately rolled in the Culturama stage and managed to continue to PPC service area where the vehicle was temporarily repaired.

Day two repeated most of the stages and the contest was on between Iddo Steyn and Ross Bartle who drove impressively with the assistance of their navigators to negotiate the rough and tough Longmore forest stages where the surface became unstable from the leading vehicles, including dust and blinding sunsets. The rally ended at Kings Beach with about 10 000 spectators supporting the event. Iddo Steyn/Darren Murphy took overall honors in this regional event followed by Ross/Neville Bartle who drove consistently to move them up in the championship. An impressive drive by Reggie Beldon/ Mark Irvine saw them finish in third place.

22 NOVEMBER 2009

The fifth round of the regional championship revisited Vlaktes using this resourceful area to alternate stages. With the drought conditions road surfaces were rough and dusty making the event a calculated gamble between speed and consistency. Devon Alchin with the assistance of Mark Irvine as navigator managed the perfect balance to win the event followed by Werner Olivier/Mariska Els then Wade Van Zummeren/Vuyani Jakavu. Ross Bartle maintained a consistent pace to finish fourth and championship leader Iddo Steyn was a non-finisher.

5 DECEMBER 2009

The final stage for the regional championship of 2009 was down to the wire with Ross Bartle leading the championship closely followed by Iddo Steyn and respective navigators. The event was once again at Vlaktes where Ross Bartle won the first three stages and looked favorable to clinch the championship in his first year of rallying. Stage 4 was the championship decider with Ross Bartle crashing out of the stage with a broken tie rod end bolt. With assistance from fellow competitor Rikus Smit who dismantled a part of his car, Ross was able to get going to complete the event.

The driver’s championship was won by Iddo Steyn and finishing one point behind was Ross Bartle. In the Navigators championship first place went to Mark Irvine followed by Darren Murphy. Third place was driver Reggie Beldon and navigator Mark Irvine. The championship, even though the number of competitors started low due to some date changes and competitors not being available with national commitments, was downgraded from a Regional to a club championship. With the tough economic climate, the organisers also had to economise by using alternative and repeated stages at Vlaktes, but that in no way compromised the standard of competition with the variety Vlaktes has to offer.

The Algoa Rally Committee of 2009 congratulates the winners and wishes to thank Volkswagen Motor Sport s’ Andre Van De Watt, Mike Rowe and staff, Rikus Fourie and family, Willie Zietsman and marshals and also Selwyn Robinson and team for the endless job of preparing the stages as well as Keith Coleman and team for supporting the events with back up.
