Results - Loerie Rally 2014

The fourth round of the 50k Challenge was held on Saturday 27 September 2014 starting at the Thornhill Hotel with documentation and scrutineering. The first rally car Etienne and Mauritz Malherbe, driver and navigator, driving a Datsun SSS was the first car to enter the Melon stage in Loerie. The stage though was won by Rikus Schmidt and Stephno Pieterse, sending a clear message that they are on a mission.

Unfortunately the pair, in their quest to maintain the pace, clipped the apex of a corner launching the Volkswagen Polo and causing the vehicle to roll.

Ettiene and Mauritz went on to win the next two stages and maintained the lead to the finish, taking the overall win, ahead of Iddo Steyn and Mark Irvine driving a Ford Escort, and in third place, Darren Murphy and Roxanne Bartle in a 2 Lt Golf, all within a few seconds of the leaders.

Class wins were S3 Ettiene and Maritze 2lt Datsun SSS, S2 Rikus Schmidt and Stephno Pieterse VW Polo 1600, who managed to recover from the roll over. S1 Jan Vosloo and Ria Viljoen driving a well prepared Toyota Yaris 1400cc.

The rally stages were  Melon stage 1&2, Mission road 3&4 gravel followed by Van Stadens Pass tar 5&6, run in the reverse direction. The gravel stages were fairly fast and the first casualty was Denzou Ferreira and Bobby Murray driving a Nissan 1400 LDV, who overshot a corner damaging the rear suspension, Bryan and Andrew Heine got airborne in their Datsun SSS and landed hard damaging the rear axle, both had to retire,

The rally ended at the Thornhill Hotel with indoor and outdoor fires burning, where competitors relaxed,  sharing the highs and lows of the event followed by a spit braai and prize giving.

Going into the penultimate round of the 50k challenge, Ashley Bezuidenout is leading the championship with consistent class wins in a S1 1400cc VW Golf, followed closely by Ross Bartle and Rikus Schmidt S3 and S2 VW Polo’s. This sets the stage for the next event which will be on 8 November 2014 in Jefferys Bay, the Fountains Mall sponsored rally and the championship is expected to be a close contest with the final event which will include night stages still to be advised
