OCEAN BASKET – 50k Challenge 7 June 2014

21 rally cars left the Ocean Basket for the first stage at Daniel Pienaar School where a crowd of spectators watched the rally cars negotiating the tight tar sections around the school court yard, which caught many navigators unaware of the difficult technical stage.

The gravel stages of Motherwell and the Pipeline claimed a few casualties, with broken suspension parts, particularly the pipe line which had a deceiving step up which caused most of the casualties.

Iddo Steyn and navigator Mark Irvine driving a Ford Escort, were in first place even after stopping in the pipeline stage but managed to get going again and finished 14 seconds ahead of Rikus Schmidt/Stephno Pieterse driving S1600 Polo, who also faltered in stage one with gear selection problems.

Third place by 1.15 seconds was Johan Viljoen and daughter navigator Juane driving a 2 Lt Volkswagen Golf. 1.43 seconds behind was Nico Smith and Roxanne Bartle, another Polo 2 Lt, followed by Jacques Louw and Ruan Gerber VW Citi Golf, who received the Hooligan of the day award for cornering on two wheels and entertaining the spectators at Daniel Pienaar School.

Out of town competitors who were favourites for the day were Thilo Himmel/Pierre Arries VW Polo S 2000, broke a shock absorber and Etienne and Mauritz Malherbe Datsun SSS a side shaft. Denzou Ferreira/Bobby Murray Nissan 14 Bakkie, did not finish the last stage, however all were favourites especially when entertaining the spectators with sideways action.

The rally ended with the last stage at Daniel Pienaar and prize giving at the Ocean Basket and marshal of the day was Yolandi Fielding who received an award for her dedication and accuracy. The organisers acknowledged and thanked the sponsors – Ocean Basket – Daniel Pienaar School – Glendore Quarry – San Group/JP Van Zyl - Magnetic Storm - Auto Towing Services.
