R50kChallenge Club Championship

After seven rounds of rally events held in Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage and Jeffery’s Bay, including the Volkswagen National rally held over two days, and with the final event; Heinesport day and night rally held on the 25 and 26 November 2016, the winners of the 50K rally championship were Rikus Schmidt and Cherilee Pieterse, father and daughter driving a Volkswagen Polo 1600cc.

The final event was a close contest with Rikus Schmidt shadowing Johan and Ruan Viljoen driving a similar VW Polo, until the last few stages when Rikus took the lead in points to win the Heinesport Rally and 50k Championship. The pair was rewarded at a champagne spray prize giving with a new Volkswagen Polo to convert into a rally car, along with rally protective clothing and accessories from ATS Motorsport, and a digitally printed gazebo from Cape Fabric Engineering.

Johan Viljoen pocketed R 15 000.00 for second prize and Stephno Pieterse R 7500.00 for third place and competitors who scored points in the championship shared in the R 25 000.00 Heinesport rally bucks. The final event Heinesport rally attracted competitors from Cape Town and Bloemfontein with 27 cars which started the rally at Aldo Scribante Race track then onto Motherwell farms, Jachtvlakte and Spiders web which were repeated night and day.

The Algoa Rally Club 50k Challenge is the only motor sport event in South Africa which offers lucrative prizes and prize money for participation in the championship and this is complimented with prizes during the year including the sought after Gabriel Jewellers Tissott watches as first prize for the Fountains Mall Rally held in Jeffery’s Bay.

Algoa Rally Club has experienced continuous growth since the inception of the 50k in 2013 and with the recent withdrawal of the factory teams in the National Championship for 2017 the 50k Challenge is expected to grow with new competitors entering the fray next year.
