Ocean Basket Rally a huge success !

The second round of the Algoa Rally 50k challenge Ocean Basket rally started in Uitenhage on Saturday 11 May 2013 with an entry of 30 rally vehicles. Cannon street was blocked off by the traffic department and a hive of activity as spectators gathered to view the teams in action with vehicle preparation and documentation. The Ocean Basket prepared a special breakfast for the rally and was well supported, while commentary from Lerryn from the veranda overlooking the Rally cars interviewing competitors and keeping the spectators informed, was a picturesque setting with perfect Uitenhage weather.

National teams of Volkswagen Sasolracing and Team Castrol Toyota, with the absence of Mark Cronje Ford whose car was not ready in time, were the first cars to leave the Ocean Basket followed by the 50k challenge vehicles at 2 minute intervals for the first stage at Jagtvlakte.Datsun SSS Malherbe

The 1st stage started at the old power station Jagtvlakte with Ross Bartle and Rick Janse Van Rensburg as the first casualty with engine problems which ended their hopes, in a new Polo 2litre. The national competitor stage win went to Leeroy Poulter and navigator Elvene Coetzee driving a Toyota S2000 Yaris and 50k challange stage winner new campaigners locally Etienne and Mauritz Malherbe driving a Datsun 180 U SSS.

The next few stages were held in the Longmore Forests and claimed 2 local competitor championship hopes of Neels Vosloo driving a Nissan and Johan Viljoen Volkswagen Golf both in class (3) 2lt in separate incidents, who rolled out of contention. Masters of the Longmore Forest stages were Leeroy Poulter and Elvene Coetzee driving a Toyota S2000 Yaris for their first win in the newly built Yaris from the Glynn Hall Toyota camp. Etienne and Mauritz Malherbe driving a Datsun SSS from George reigned supreme in their first 50k event and took the Class (3) honours for the day upstaging the local competitors.

Class 2 winner was Darren Murphy and Matteo Casale Driving a Datsun P510 and Class 1 Fires Auto Rohan Van Vuuren and Jacques Louw with repective navigator Kim and Gabriel driving 1400 Citi Golfs.

The rally ended at JC.s Pub and Restaurant in Loerie where 150 rally competitors, pit crews and officials, attended the prize giving and spit braai.

National teams were satisfied with the results of what was an opportunity to test and set up vehicles for the forthcoming VW National Rally that will take place on the 19 and 20 July 3013 and who were impressed with the standard of local Rally and Algoa Rally Club hospitality.
