Race preview: Fountains Mall Rally 2011

Fountains Mall, Jeffreys Bay, will be the centre of attraction this Saturday with rally cars participating in special stages around the car park area during the day. To keep the spectators entertained, drifting cars will give demonstrations between the rally stages, with smoking tyres and sideways action from Wayne Smith.

The Rally cars will consist of three classes with a variety of vehicles which include the Volkswagen RA5 Junior Rally Team, S20 modified,/Retro pre-1985 and Luk coastal challenge.  Drivers and navigators from 17 years of age to 79, will be competing in all makes of vehicles from pre-1985 to modern saloon cars rigged out for gravel and tar.

The rally will Start at Fountains Mall then proceed down St Frances Rd then turn into housing development known as the Luk Clutches stage. From there the cars will proceed back along St Frances and turn right into R 102 and at the bottom enter the Blue Waters Complex stage called Moveable Assets. The rally vehicles will return to Fountains Mall for another car park stage and then into service area at the mall.


The gravel stages will follow the service park break along Jubilee Road and will be known as the Detroit Motors special stage and then onto Die Glen farm and R 330 Nok Vervoer.
The rally will be repeated along these stages during the day ending at Fountains Mall with the prize giving at the Tart & Roses where all are welcome. Bay FM will broadcast live crossings to the rally during the day for progress reports on results and activities.


The contest for overall honours is expected between S20 Nico Smith and Stephno Pieterse, respective driver and navigator in a VW Polo, Rikus Smit and RA5 class leader Devon Alchin and Mark Irvine with Ross Bartle and Jouwert vander Walt chasing hard for championship points in this penultimate round of the championship as well as for prestige watches from Gabriel Jewellers which will be awarded to the winners on the day.


Luk Coastal challenge championship leader Hawie Havenga will be the man to beat with Ex formula one driver Lionel Rowe 79 years of age and evergreen navigator John Finlayson, 71, current karting campaigner who will be navigating,  looking forward to showing the youngsters the way.


The Rally starts at 9:30 am on Saturday 29 October and will finish around 4:30 pm. Spectators are welcome to attend.
