The Ocean Basket 50k rally challenge will take place on the 7 June 2014 in the Uitenhage area. The rally will start and end at the Ocean Basket in Uitenhage with documentation from early morning. What is significant about this rally is that some of the stages will be at Daniel Pienaar School and will be repeated during the day and this will include the servicing of the rally cars in the car park area of the (A) rugby field, where spectators are invited to see the action.

The association of Daniel Pienaar and Algoa Rally Club is shared with the passion for Motor Sport. The technical school has an extra-mural Motor Sport activity where pupils are introduced to the technical aspects of motor racing. The school also recognises Motor Sport as a school sport. Algoa Rally Club wishes to support this initiative by bringing the 50k challenge rally to the school and will include national Volkswagen Sasolracing rally entries.

The first stage is at Daniel Pienaar school grounds, starting at the main entrance and around the buildings onto gravel. The rally cars will then proceed along the Daniel Pienaar road towards Motherwell then left along the Addo road past the quarry where gravel only stages will be run adjacent to the Nooitgedacht pipeline, followed by Glendore quarry road and Motherwell farms, and then return to the school. These stages will be repeated during the day and end at the Ocean Basket for the prize giving.

Volkswagen Sasolracing will be using this event as a warm up to the National Volkswagen rally taking place in July. Top national competitors Henk Lategan and navigator Barry White driving a Volkswagen Polo S2000, will be a crowd pleaser and will be expected to set the pace ahead of Thilo Himmel and Pierre Arries in a Polo Vivo S2000.

The 50k challenge second round of the six events is expected to attract at least 20 rally vehicles all competing for the R 50 000.00 prize and runner up cash prizes, unique to Motor Sport in South Africa with the prizes donated by local business. Rally cars taking part will include championship contenders, Etienne Malherbe from George, Nissan 2lt, Polo Vivo’s of Rikus Schmidt and Ross Bartle and Datsun SSS of Brian Heine, The classical Fords of Iddo Steyn and contingent of the ever faithful Volkswagen Citi Golf are also in with a chance for class win.

All eyes will be on Jacques Louw, last year’s 50k winner, Denzou Ferreira in a Nissan bakkie 1400, both ex Daniel Pienaar, and current school pupil 16 year old Ashley Bezuidenhout who will be driving a development Volkswagen Motor Sport built RA5 Citi Golf after graduating from National Karting, assisted by follow Daniel Pienaar technical department as pit crew and navigator Ruan Gerber.

Spectators are invited to follow the rally and viewing the cars, drivers and navigators at the Ocean Basket from 8h00 on Saturday; the first car leaves at 11h00 for Daniel Pienaar. The school will have refreshments and lunch snacks on sale from the canteen and the rally is expected to finish around 16h00 at the Ocean Basket.
